Cataract Surgery and Factors Affecting Success
- It is vital to determine the correct lens number to be used before surgery. Here, the correct lens number can be determined with the latest technology devices and experience.
- The margin of error is high in measurements taken by inexperienced staff, second-hand or cheap, poor-quality, non-calibrated devices.
- If the lens number is not calculated correctly before surgery, abnormal results will occur and either lens replacement with surgery or number correction with laser is required.
- If both eyes have cataracts, surgery should never be performed on both eyes on the same day. The aim here is not to put both eyes of the patient at risk in case of an infection and not to cause the loss of both eyes. This is a universal rule applied all over the world. Unfortunately, there are centers where this rule is violated. Our patients should not allow this and should wait at least 48-72 hours between the surgery of both eyes (never trust those who use expressions such as we work very sterile, we do not have infection, even if the development of infection is one in a million, you will be the unlucky one in a million, and the postoperative eye infection is almost irreversible).
- Cataract surgery is a microsurgical operation that requires advanced experience. The sophistication of the microscope and the Phaco device used here, and of course the experience of the surgeon using them and the quality of the intraocular lenses used are very important. Be sure to question the device to be used, the brand of the intraocular lens and the experience of your surgeon before the surgery. After the surgery, ask for the brand and label of the lens worn on the eye.
- Another important point is that the surgeon should examine the patient himself/herself before surgery and take precautions accordingly by detecting the slightest risk that may occur in the patient before surgery. More importantly, he/she should also see and follow up his/her patient after surgery. Patients who undergo surgery in places where these rules are not applied unfortunately cannot find an interlocutor when a complication develops and become even more unhappy.
