Keratoconus Problem Hinders Education
Ankara Dünyagöz Hospital took care of 15-year-old Mustafa Hokka, who lives in Kırıkkale and had to interrupt his education due to keratoconus disease in his eye.
15-year-old high school student Mustafa Hokka had to interrupt his education due to his eye disease. Ankara Dünyagöz Hospital Coordinator Hüseyin Kılavuz, who took action upon the reflection of the news in the press, reached the Hokka family living in Kırıkkale. Invited to Ankara, father İsmail Hokka and his son Mustafa were first examined and diagnosed with the disease. Mustafa was diagnosed with keratoconus disease after an examination by Op. Dr. Sibel Şalvarlı. Mustafa will undergo surgery in the coming days.
and regain her health.
Op. Dr. Sibel Şalvarlı stated that keratoconus is a progressive collagen tissue disease that causes thinning, steepening and deformity of the transparent layer called cornea covering the front surface of the eye and said, “It causes symptoms such as an increase in eye numbers, especially in the direction of myopia and astigmatism, inability to see clearly with glasses, discomfort from light, glare and frequent glasses number changes. It usually starts in adolescence and progresses until the age of 34-35. The causes of the disease include genetic predisposition, traumas such as rubbing and scratching. In advanced cases, it can lead to corneal transplantation.”
Op. Dr. Şalvarlı stated that today, in the treatment of keratoconus disease, corneal collagen crosslinking, popularly known as radiation therapy, and corneal ring treatments are applied to increase visual acuity and said, “Corneal thickness is important for these treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments cannot be performed in very thin corneas (below 400 microns) and corneal transplantation is required. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment is of vital importance.”
Op. Dr. Şalvarlı said, “During the examination of our patient Mustafa Hokka, keratoconus was diagnosed as advanced in the right eye and in the initial stage in the left eye. Since our patient is 15 years old and the disease is progressive and corneal thicknesses are found to be at the limit value for treatment, corneal collagen crosslinking surgery to stop the disease in both eyes without wasting time, as well as corneal ring treatment to increase vision was deemed appropriate since the cornea in the right eye is at the limit value and vision does not increase with glasses.”
Dünyaagöz Ankara Regional Coordinator Hüseyin Kılavuz said, “It was not possible to remain insensitive to the situation of this family living in Kırıkkale. As soon as we saw the news, we reached them and invited the family to our hospital for their treatment. Mustafa had to interrupt his high school education due to eye discomfort. As Dünyagöz Ankara, we will perform Mustafa's operation in our hospital on Monday and ensure that he regains his eye health. I hope Mustafa, who said that he wants to return to his education life despite everything, will return to his school. We have learned that other members of the Hokka family have eye problems and we will also treat them in our hospital. We will do our best for them.” - ANKARA
