Keratoconus, which is a progressive eye disease that occurs when the cornea becomes thinner and tapers outwards more than normal, creates consequences up to corneal transplantation if left untreated.
Experts who warned citizens against keratoconus, a progressive eye disease that occurs when the cornea becomes thinner and tapers outward more than normal, said that the disease causes serious health problems up to corneal transplantation when neglected. One of the physicians of Dünyagöz Hospital, Op. Dr. Sibel Şalvarlı, one of the physicians of Dünyagöz Hospital, stated that a keratoconus treatment period produced with the most superior technology for patients, which is unique in terms of its features and benefits, has started and drew attention to the fact that the disease should not be neglected.
It Starts in Adolescence
Explaining that the disease causes an increase in myopia and astigmatism along with the sharpening of the cornea, Şalvarlı said, “Keratoconus disease can also be briefly called corneal deformity. Due to the deformity, a complete improvement in vision cannot be achieved with glasses. The disease, which usually starts in adolescence, progresses between the ages of 20 and 40 and enters a stationary period after the age of 40. There are many causes of the disease and sometimes there is a genetic predisposition. Allergic eye conditions can also predispose to keratoconus. In case of keratoconus disease or suspicion, interventions such as laser that will thin the cornea should be avoided.”
Attention to Symptoms
Symptoms such as having keratoconus in the family, constant allergies / itching in the eye, constantly progressing myopia and astigmatism, not being able to see clearly despite glasses, continuous progression of eye degrees, decreased vision, pale perception of colors, difficulty in driving at night can mean that you have keratoconus disease. People who frequently experience these symptoms should see a refractive surgery center where very special examinations are performed in terms of keratoconus disease.
Early Diagnosis is Important
Stating that Dünya Eye Hospital is the first institution in Turkey to open a Keratoconus Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Şalvarlı said the following: “Unfortunately, keratoconus disease is a progressive disease. Progressive sharpening and thinning of the cornea causes a larger deformation in the eye over time. If left untreated, it leads to consequences up to corneal transplantation. Our center is of great importance for early diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of this disease. Early diagnosis can prevent or slow the progression to corneal transplantation in many patients. ”
