What Causes Keratoconus
The exact cause is unknown. It is a disease of young adults. It starts in adolescence.
Early diagnosis and treatment is important. It is progressive and may progress to corneal transplantation.
It does not necessarily run in the family, but the disease can also be genetic.
Environmental factors (hot climate, dusty environments), allergic eye diseases are among the causes.
Unfortunately, our country is one of the countries where keratoconus is common. It is especially common in the Mediterranean Region, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia.
Allergic eye diseases, spring catarrh, etc. are common with diseases that cause constant rubbing and scratching of the eye.
If allergy, itching and rubbing are not treated and prevented, the progression of the disease cannot be prevented.
